CEAMS CASE STUDY JRSI
James Robinson Speciality Ingredients (JRSI) is a leading developer and manufacturer of high-performance ingredients for use in cosmetics and other specialised industries. With its Technology HQ in the United Kingdom and a manufacturing base and global distribution network in India, JRSI combines cutting-edge research with large-scale production to deliver innovative solutions to the market. Committed to improving its social and environmental footprint, JRSI continually seeks to evolve its processes and enhance sustainability across its operations.
Challenge
JRSI aimed to scale up the production of Ectoine—a naturally occurring compound known for its protective and moisturizing properties, widely used in premium skincare products. While Ectoine presents a sustainable alternative to petrochemical-based ingredients, scaling up its production through fermentation posed significant technical challenges. JRSI needed to ensure the process could be efficiently translated from lab-scale to commercial production while maintaining product quality and maximizing yield.
Solution
To address this challenge, JRSI partnered with CPI to evaluate and optimize their fermentation process for Ectoine production. CPI’s support involved:
Bringing JRSI’s production strain and methods into their lab.
Running the fermentation process under scaled-down conditions to simulate full-scale production.
Identifying process bottlenecks and providing recommendations to enhance efficiency and scalability.
By conducting detailed process analysis and optimization, CPI helped JRSI fine-tune critical parameters, improve fermentation consistency, and minimize production risks.
Results
Through CPI’s expertise, JRSI was able to:
- Validate the fermentation process under controlled lab conditions.
- Improve process efficiency and consistency at scale.
- Expedite the transition from lab-scale to commercial
